Having just celebrated Thanksgiving, I am mindful of those for which I am thankful. Among those are the rehabilitation professionals that made up the CRP-RCEP. While UNTWISE lives on, the CRP-RCEP progam within it has closed. During its thirteen years, this award winning program produced over 1,050 events for 21,000 plus people resulting in excess of 180,000 contact hours of training and technical assistance in addition to numerous pubilications. Not only have the CRP-RCEP staff provided cutting edge training and technical assistance within the region but many have gone on to hold prominent positions in policy and rehabilitation agencies. We were very fortunate to have this resource. The CRP-RCEP was one of the 21 RCEPs closed by RSA in order to redirect funding to establish TACE centers.

Self-Help groups support Recovery

The National Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use issued a new report in November about the role of self-help groups helping people with substance abuse problems. This survey of 67,500 respondents indicated that self-help groups assist individuals to sustain their recovery used in conjunction with treatment.

Self Disclosure and Mental Health

Stigma is a significant obstacle to the recovery of individuals with mental illness. Research has shown that attitudes about mental health issues improve when personal contact with a person with mental illness occurs. How do we bridge the gap between stigma and disclosure? A new mongraph on self disclosure and in particular as it relates to employment from The Center for Mental Health Services has been issued. The report proides further insight on the issue of stigma and disclosure.

National Resource Directory

An online resource directory has been launched for veterans and injured service members, their families and those who support them from recovery and rehabilitation to community reintegration. The National Resource Directory provides information about state, local and federal resources in both the public and private sectors.

Transitions

Jim Humes, Ph.D, has again retired from the Region VI CRP-RCEP; however, he remains available to consult for UNTWISE. After several attempts to retire, Dr. Humes has resigned himself. While he may check out, he will never leave UNT.

Southwest Region National Rehabilitation Association awarded Martha Garber the Voyle C. Scurlock Award for outstanding service in rehabilitation and Debbie Wooten the Meritorious Service Award at the 2008 conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Margaret Cortez has accepted a postion with UNT's Director of Research.
