Ethics: Enhancing the Consumer Image

Professional ethics for Employment Specialists clearly guides our interactions with the consumers as they enter into the workforce, demonstrate skills and show competencies that meet the employer needs. Underlying in this achievement is the ability of the consumer to fit into the work place, culturally and socially. This is more likely to occur when the employer and coworkers perceive the person as capable of performing and completing needed work. We want to explore the ethical considerations of working with the consumer, in the workplace and in active engagement with employers and coworkers. What is our role in projecting a positive image that will impact the dynamics of the relationship among all the employees?

Awareness of this critical component of the consumer’s image starts from the very onset of our relationship with the employer, language in the work environment, training techniques and follow-up communications. As we consider ethical practices in our service delivery strategies, the goal for the person to become a valued member of the workplace includes the image they project to their employer, coworkers and customers. 

Presenter: Judith Guetzow

Judith Guetzow is an instructor at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, has a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, and is a nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).  Ms. Guetzow is a PhD Candidate in the Leadership Studies program at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas.  Her extensive experience in rehabilitation services includes supports for persons with addictions, medical aspects of rehabilitation, disability awareness, and education in the prevention of violence against people with disabilities. She is known to her students as being fair and accommodating, going above and beyond to make sure the materials are understood.
