Employment counseling and services with a drug addict in recovery can be one as rewarding as it is unpredictable and frustrating. The Rehabilitation Counselor and Employment Specialist may find that they are routinely challenged with the “one step forward – two steps back” as the client struggles to retain recovery and wellness. Needless to say, the culture of drugs can quickly unravel a person’s path to employment and maintaining a job. Often, a person can find and get the job, but keeping the job long-term is the real challenge.
What ethical guidelines must we consider when supporting a person with a history of substance abuse. When is the issue an ethical dilemma vs. a legal obligation? And, do you have a process in place to consider these circumstances to support the consumer and your staff to proceed to the next step if and when it is necessary?
