Discovery, Themes and Successful Job Development

Session 1: This session provides an overview of the steps in Discovering Personal Genius as an assessment process; how Vocational Themes are derived and tested, and then how Themes are used to craft a job development plan. The session also introduces the Customized approach to job development, job creation, and self-employment as an alternative to wage employment. We’ll discuss how one leverages social capital, blends multiple funding sources, and job develops up business supply chains to find more relevant, better fitting individualized employment.

Session 2: This session builds off the information that was presented in Session 1. We will talk about how to take themes, conditions of employment, skills and interests and use them to uncover a myriad of businesses and the unlimited ways people make a living. We will discuss a different approach to job development in which the primary goal is to get advice from a business person or artisan about how what a person needs to do or know to pursue a career in that field. Included in the discussion will be tips on the Art of the Informational Interview, exploring job creation options, and how to go where a career makes sense.

Presenter: Cary Griffin

Cary Griffin is Senior Partner of Griffin-Hammis Associates. Currently, Cary manages over 2 dozen nationally distributed projects related to Customized Employment implementation and training, systems change, and microenterprise. He is the co-author of ; Making Self-Employment Work for People with Disabilities and The Job Developer’s Handbook. Cary is also the Board Chair for the Center for Social Capital that oversees the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation’s Microloan Fund.

Co-Presenter: Bob Niemiec

Bob Niemiec is a Senior Consultant with Griffin-Hammis Associates, LLC and serves as the Director of the Minnesota Employment Training and Technical Assistance Center (MNTAT).  Bob brings over 32 years of experience in employment services for people with disabilities having worked in direct service to executive director.  Bob has provided training and consultation on Customized Employment, Organizational Change and Management in 43 states and with several county, state, and federal agencies.  He has assisting in the planning and facilitation of Employment First events in 10 states.  Bob has served in leadership roles for several state and national organization including APSE:  The Association for People Supporting Employment First, Minnesota APSE and is a founding member of the Minnesota Employment First Coalition.
